How we write and check this site

Buyers commit large sums on the strength of a web page, and tobacco is a regulated product, so we hold the copy to a plain standard.

Sources and scope

Where the figures come from

Every grade, nicotine value, sugar value, quantity and price shown on the site comes from one catalogue file, so the same grade cannot appear with two different numbers on two pages. Figures are for the crop year shown and are indicative until your quotation confirms them. Where we cannot show a number, such as burley or oriental, we say it is quoted per enquiry rather than guess.

What we leave out

  • Health claims of any kind. See the health and compliance notice.
  • Superlatives such as “best” or “finest”, which a buyer cannot check.
  • Certifications, awards or inspection bodies we cannot document. If a page says a certificate is available, we can send it.
  • Consumer brand names and consumer-style advice about smoking.

General knowledge versus our own lots

Pages and posts mix two kinds of statement. Some describe how the trade works in general, for example how flue-curing differs from air-curing. Others describe our own lots, grades and terms. We try to keep these separate in the text, and general explanations point to outside sources where there are good ones.

Updates and corrections

Each page shows the date it was last updated. We change figures when the crop or the price list changes, and we correct errors when we find them or are told about them. To report one, email sales@jktabak.com with the page address and what is wrong.

Who writes the site and how

Who is behind the site

JKTabak is an exporter with 20 years in the tobacco leaf trade and offices in Swabi, Pakistan and Oudenaarde, Belgium. Every page shows the date it was last updated and carries a “Reviewed by” line naming Adam Smith, who checks the figures and wording before they are published. The company and its address details are on the about page and the contact page.

How a page is produced

  1. The numbers come from our catalogue, which is built from our lot sheets and current price list.
  2. The general trade explanations are written from standard industry knowledge, such as how curing works.
  3. Where a point is specific, such as a customs code or a regulation, we cite a source on the page.
  4. The page is read, edited and dated. The date at the top is the last time its content changed.

Where we cite sources, and which

We use primary and institutional sources where we can: the World Health Organization for health and tobacco-control facts, the World Customs Organization for customs classification, the International Chamber of Commerce for Incoterms and the EU’s official legal database for EU law. For laboratory methods we point to CORESTA, the industry research body, rather than inventing our own. If a link stops working, tell us.

How often we update

We update product tables when the crop, quantity or price changes, and we review the guides when rules or practice change. We note the date at the top of every page. A page that has not changed for a long time has simply not needed to.

Corrections

If a page contains an error, we correct it and update the date. There is no formal corrections log yet; if we make a significant correction, we will say so on the page itself.

Independence and contact

Advertising and independence

The pages do not carry advertising. The site exists to help buyers decide whether to contact us, so naturally it describes our own products; where we discuss other companies’ products or origins, we try to be fair to them.

Contact

To report an error or suggest an improvement, write to sales@jktabak.com.

What a reader can check

We try to make our statements checkable. Customs codes can be checked against the Harmonized System. Incoterms can be checked against the ICC’s published rules. Health statements can be checked on the WHO pages we link. Our grade figures can be checked by asking for the lot sheet and a sample. If you cannot check something we have said, tell us, and we will either provide the evidence or correct the page.

Photos and video from our lots

Pictures and clips of leaf we handle. For current photographs or video of a specific lot, ask us. The full sets are on the gallery and videos pages.
