Buyer’s guideBefore you order: what to know and what to check.
What rustica is and how we supply it
What rustica is
Rustica is a different species (Nicotiana rustica) from the Nicotiana tabacum that flue-cured Virginia, burley and oriental all belong to. It is traditionally sun-cured. Its leaf and its chemistry behave differently from Virginia-type leaf, so a buyer should be clear about the intended product, the nicotine target and the processing method before ordering.
What we supply
Grade WP-4, equivalent to Grade 3, 2026 crop, in C48 export boxes, as hand-stemmed or machine-stemmed strips. Values, quantity and indicative price are in the strips table.
What to include in an enquiry
- Hand strips or machine strips
- What the leaf is for, and your nicotine target
- Quantity (minimum one container) and destination port
Rustica is subject to availability, and the rules on importing it vary by country. Check both before ordering. Terms, packing and documents are on the wholesale terms page.
Origin and use
Where rustica comes from
Nicotiana rustica is native to the Americas, where it was cultivated long before the arrival of European colonists. It spread widely and has been grown for centuries in parts of Asia, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. In the 19th and 20th centuries, a coarse tobacco known as makhorka, made from rustica, became widespread in Russia and neighbouring countries. Rustica grows in cooler conditions and ripens more quickly than Nicotiana tabacum, which made it a practical crop in places where other types were harder to grow.
How it differs from other tobacco
- Leaf shape. Rustica leaves are rounder, thicker and more fleshy than Virginia or burley leaf, and the plant is shorter, with yellow-green flowers instead of pink.
- Chemistry. Rustica is generally known for a much higher nicotine level than ordinary tobacco. In the trade you will often hear it called strong. Our WP-4 lot is listed at 1.3% nicotine, which is lower than many buyers expect from the species. That is exactly why we recommend asking for the lot analysis rather than relying on assumptions.
- Curing. Traditionally sun-cured. Some rustica is air-cured or fire-cured in different markets.
How it is used
Rustica is used in traditional regional products and in some blends, especially pipe and hookah mixes, and it has long been used where a heavy, pungent leaf is wanted. Because of its distinct character, buyers typically specify the intended use and test a small quantity first. Tobacco-control authorities in some countries treat rustica differently from ordinary tobacco, so check the rules before buying.
What we list and what to ask
What we list
We supply WP-4 as hand-stemmed and machine-stemmed strips, equivalent to Grade 3 on our scale. The nicotine, sugar, quantity and indicative price are in the strips table. We do not publish loose-leaf or other grades of rustica. If you need a different style or grade, send us the specification and we will say what we can do.
What to ask before you order
- The nicotine and moisture result for the lot, and the method used.
- The crop year and how the leaf was cured.
- Whether your destination permits the import and sale of rustica.
- A sample from the lot before committing to a container.
For terms, packing and documents, read the wholesale terms and the export documents checklist.
Handling, analysis and regulation
Handling strong leaf safely
Nicotine is absorbed through the skin, and workers who handle wet green tobacco can develop a condition called green tobacco sickness, with nausea, vomiting and dizziness. It is mainly a risk in the field and for fresh leaf, but it is a reminder that strong tobacco calls for care. Cured leaf is much less hazardous to handle, but good practice still applies: gloves, washing hands, and avoiding eating or drinking while handling. If you will process rustica in your plant, include it in your safety procedures and ask your supplier about the nicotine level of the lot.
The two species compared
General comparison | Nicotiana tabacum | Nicotiana rustica |

Why the lot analysis matters more for rustica
Because the nicotine level of rustica can be much higher than that of other types, a buyer who gets it wrong can end up with a product far stronger than intended. For that reason we treat the lot analysis as essential for rustica. If a supplier quotes a nicotine value without a lot-specific test result and a method, ask for both. Our own listed figure is in the strips table and is indicative until the quotation confirms it.
Regulation and classification
Customs classify unmanufactured tobacco under heading 2401 regardless of species, but regulators in some countries treat rustica-based products differently, and some do not allow certain strong tobaccos at all. Before you order, ask your authority whether rustica is permitted and whether any extra requirements apply. See our health and compliance notice.
Sampling and testing rustica
Because the nicotine figure for rustica can vary a lot, sampling matters. Draw from several packages, mix, and divide the portions as for any leaf. Test for nicotine, moisture and, if your market requires it, residues. Keep a sealed retained portion. If the first result surprises you, ask for a retest on the retained portion by a second laboratory before you accept or reject the lot.
Tobacco is harmful to health. JKTabak supplies tobacco leaf to licensed commercial buyers only (manufacturers, processors, importers and distributors). The buyer is responsible for confirming that import, purchase and resale of tobacco is lawful in the destination country.
Frequently asked questions
Is rustica the same as other tobacco?
No. It is a different species, so check the lot analysis against your requirement rather than assuming it matches Virginia-type leaf.
Which forms are available?
Hand-stemmed and machine-stemmed strips in C48 export boxes.
What is makhorka?
A coarse, strong tobacco traditionally made from Nicotiana rustica, widely used in Russia and nearby countries.
Is rustica always high in nicotine?
It is generally known for high nicotine, but values vary by lot. Our listed WP-4 figure is in the strips table, and the lot analysis is the only reliable guide.
Where can I buy rustica tobacco in bulk?
Licensed manufacturers, processors and importers can buy rustica in bulk from JKTabak as WP-4 hand- or machine-stemmed strips in C48 export boxes, sold by the container. Check availability and your import rules first, then
request a quote with the form, intended use, nicotine target and destination port.
Where can I buy the best quality rustica tobacco wholesale?
For top quality rustica, insist on a lot-specific nicotine and moisture result with the test method, the crop year and the curing method, because rustica varies more than ordinary leaf. JKTabak lists WP-4 with stated figures and supplies a sample where lawful so you can verify before committing to a container.
Where can I buy rustica tobacco online?
JKTabak does not run a consumer web shop. We sell raw rustica leaf online only in the sense that you enquire through our website and receive a written quotation; the deal is business to business, by the container, for licensed buyers. Use the
contact form to start.
Who is the best supplier of rustica tobacco?
We cannot rank suppliers fairly, but you can judge any of them by the same checks: a lot-specific nicotine result, a clear curing method, a sample, written terms and export documents. JKTabak offers WP-4 with those items, has 20 years in raw-leaf exports and sells only to licensed buyers.
How much does rustica tobacco cost per kg?
Our listed WP-4 (Grade 3 equivalent) strips are priced indicatively at $8.40 per kg FOB Karachi, which is about $8,400 per ton, and the written quotation confirms the figure. Compare it with other grades in the
strips price table. Availability and price can move between crops.
Where can I buy cheap rustica tobacco?
WP-4 at an indicative $8.40 per kg is already among the moderately priced strips in our table, but we would be cautious about much cheaper rustica: very low prices often mean unknown curing, no lot analysis or poor storage. If budget is tight, ask for the sample and the nicotine result before judging value.
What is the minimum order for rustica tobacco?
One container, roughly 20 tons, is our minimum for rustica as for other leaf. Because rustica availability is limited and import rules differ by country, we suggest requesting a sample first so you test a small amount before committing to a full container. Ask on the
contact page.
Can I get a sample of rustica tobacco before I order?
Yes, where lawful. A sample from the lot lets you check smell, colour, flexibility and the nicotine result against your target before you buy a container. Because the nicotine figure for rustica can vary widely, we recommend sampling from several packages of the shipment, too. Request one through the
contact form.
How is rustica tobacco packed and shipped?
WP-4 rustica ships in C48 export boxes as hand-stemmed or machine-stemmed strips, one container at a time, priced FOB Karachi so you arrange freight from there. Net and gross weights go in the quotation. Cured leaf is less hazardous to handle than green leaf, but gloves and handwashing are still sensible.
What is WP-4 rustica tobacco?
WP-4 is JKTabak’s grade code for sun-cured Nicotiana rustica strips, equivalent to Grade 3 on our scale, 2026 crop. It is listed at 1.3% nicotine and 5% sugar in C48 export boxes. We do not publish loose-leaf or other rustica grades, so send your spec if you need something different.
What is the nicotine content of WP-4 rustica?
Our WP-4 lot is listed at 1.3% nicotine and 5% sugar, which is lower than many buyers expect from the species. Treat it as indicative: ask for the lot analysis and the method used, because rustica nicotine can vary a lot between lots and a wrong assumption leads to a much stronger product than intended.
Is rustica tobacco legal to import?
Customs classify unmanufactured tobacco under heading 2401 regardless of species, but some regulators treat rustica differently or do not allow certain strong tobaccos at all. Ask your authority before ordering. JKTabak sells only to licensed commercial buyers, and you are responsible for confirming lawful import. See our
compliance notice.
How do I import rustica tobacco into my country?
First confirm with your tobacco authority that rustica is permitted and whether extra requirements apply, then obtain the licence or permit for raw leaf. Request an FOB quotation, arrange freight from Karachi, and clear the goods under heading 2401. The
export and import page summarises the usual steps.
What documents come with a rustica tobacco shipment?
We supply the export documents with each shipment, and the list is confirmed in your quotation. For rustica, also ask for the lot analysis showing nicotine and moisture with the method used, and tell us if your market needs a residue test. The
wholesale terms page and documents checklist give the detail.
How do I check the quality of rustica tobacco leaf?
Draw samples from several packages, mix them and divide into portions, then test for nicotine, moisture and any residues your market requires. Keep a sealed retained portion. If the first result surprises you, ask a second laboratory to retest the retained portion before accepting or rejecting the lot.
How can I tell rustica leaf from ordinary tobacco leaf?
Rustica leaves are rounder, thicker and more fleshy than Virginia or burley leaf, and the plant is shorter with yellow-green flowers instead of pink. Once cured and in boxes, appearance is harder to judge, so rely on the lot analysis and the supplier’s documentation rather than looks alone.
What is rustica tobacco used for?
Rustica is used in traditional regional products and in some blends, especially pipe and hookah mixes, wherever a heavy, pungent leaf is wanted. Buyers usually state the intended use and test a small quantity first. Rules on rustica-based products differ by country, so check your market before planning a product.
Is rustica suitable for pipe or hookah blends?
It can be, as a small component where a heavy, pungent note is wanted, but strength matters more than with ordinary leaf. Blend in small test batches and keep the nicotine result of the lot in front of you. Our listed WP-4 is 1.3% nicotine and 5% sugar. Tell us the intended mix via the
contact page.
Where can I buy rustica tobacco from Pakistan?
JKTabak exports WP-4 rustica from Pakistan, with its head office in Swabi, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and quotes FOB Karachi. Buyers choose us for named grade data with stated nicotine and sugar, a container-based minimum, samples where lawful and export documents supplied with the shipment. Check your destination’s rustica rules, then
send an enquiry.
Where can I buy rustica tobacco in Europe?
European licensed buyers can enquire through our Belgian office in Oudenaarde or through Swabi. Shipments are quoted FOB Karachi, so EU import formalities and freight are arranged on your side. Some European regulators treat rustica differently, so confirm with your national authority before ordering a container.
How is rustica tobacco cured?
Rustica is traditionally sun-cured, which is how our WP-4 lot is described, although some rustica elsewhere is air-cured or fire-cured. The curing method affects aroma and chemistry, so ask for it, plus the crop year, whenever a supplier quotes rustica. Our 2026-crop WP-4 information is in the strips table.
