Hand-stemming and when to choose it

How hand-stemming works

Workers pull the central midrib out of each leaf by hand. Because every leaf is handled, off-colour, torn or foreign material can be set aside as it goes, and the lamina comes away in bigger pieces than a mechanical line usually gives.

The result is sold as hand strips. Every strip grade we list can be supplied hand-stemmed. For nicotine, sugar, quantity and indicative price, use the strips table.

Choose hand-stemmed if…

• presentation and larger strip size matter, as in some specialised or traditional blends,
• you want closer visual selection than a mechanical line gives, or
• you have no stemming process of your own and are not running very high volumes.

If you run high volumes and want even strip sizes, machine-stemmed is the usual answer.

What to agree before ordering

Strip size, stem percentage, fines, moisture and leaf condition are agreed order by order. Strip grades are packed in C48 export boxes, and the quotation states how much goes in each. Process, specification and checks

The hand-stemming process step by step

1. Grading. Leaf is sorted by colour, size and condition. Poor leaf is set aside before any stemming begins.
2. Conditioning. The leaf is brought up to a working moisture so that it does not shatter in the hands.
3. Stripping. Workers pull the leaf from the central midrib, leaving the lamina in large pieces. Because each leaf is handled, torn leaf, foreign matter and green or damaged pieces can be removed on the way.
4. Re-drying. Strips are dried back to a safe shipping moisture and cooled.
5. Packing. The strips are packed in C48 export boxes, which are the form we list for strip grades.

Why strip size matters

Hand strips are valued because the lamina stays in larger pieces. For a manufacturer, larger pieces mean fewer fines, a more even cut and a cleaner-looking blend. For a buyer who cares about the appearance of the blend, such as in specialised or traditional products, it may be worth paying for. For a high-volume cigarette plant that will cut the leaf anyway, the extra size may not justify the extra cost.

The specifications to agree

How hand and machine strips differ in practice

• Selection. Hand work lets a person reject bad leaf as they go. A machine line cannot see colour.
• Strip size. Hand strips are generally larger and less uniform in size; machine strips are more even.
• Volume. Hand work is slower. For very large volumes, a machine is the more practical option.
• Consistency. Machine lines are repeatable; hand work depends on the team and their training.

Checking hand strips in a sample

• Spread the sample out and look at the size range. Are the pieces roughly consistent with your reference?
• Look for midrib remnants: any pieces of rib still attached.
• Shake a handful over paper to see the fines.
• Smell and bend as for any sample (see our checklist).
• Compare colour with the reference sample and the grade description.

Packing, shipping and cost

Hand strips are packed in C48 export boxes, with quantities and weights given in the quotation. The indicative price per grade is in the strips table; as of our current list, hand and machine strips of the same grade carry the same indicative price, but your quotation confirms it. The practical cost question is not the price per kilogram alone, but the usable yield and the labour you save, as we explain on the loose leaf page.

Labour and sourcing questions buyers should ask

Hand work is labour-intensive, and tobacco farming and processing have a recognised history of labour problems in some parts of the world, including child labour and unsafe conditions. International bodies such as the International Labour Organization have long raised these issues. A responsible buyer asks about them. For any supplier of hand-processed leaf, including us, sensible questions are:

• Who does the work, and under what conditions?
• Is there a policy against child labour and forced labour?
• Can the supplier provide evidence, such as audits or certifications, rather than only a statement?
• Are workers paid at or above the legal minimum?
• What is the safety equipment and training?

We are happy to discuss these questions with any buyer, and we will say what we can document and what we cannot. Statements we cannot support, we will not make.

An example order

To show how the pieces fit, imagine a manufacturer of premium roll-your-own tobacco who wants larger pieces of leaf in the blend. The manufacturer would choose hand strips of a balanced FCV grade, ask for a reference-sample match on strip size and colour, set a maximum for stem remnants and fines, agree the moisture, and ask for a sample from the lot. The order would be one container, packed in C48 boxes and priced from the strips table. After the sample is approved, the contract is signed and the leaf is prepared and shipped.

Hand strips and the final product

The size of the strip influences how the leaf cuts and how it looks in the finished product. Larger lamina pieces cut into longer, more regular shreds, which can look better in a roll-your-own pouch or a pipe tin. They may also burn more evenly. These effects are subtle, and not every buyer will notice them, so test the difference in your own process before you decide that it is worth a premium.

Seasonality and capacity

Hand work depends on available labour, and capacity is limited compared with a machine line. That means lead times for hand strips can be longer than for machine strips, particularly at busy times. If you plan a large order, tell us early so that we can plan the work, and give us an idea of the timing of repeat orders.

Hand strips in a quality system

Hand work is variable by nature, so it needs checks. Good practice includes a defined standard for the stripped leaf, sampling of finished strips against that standard at intervals, retraining or correction when the sample drifts, and a record of which lot was processed by which team. Ask any supplier of hand-processed leaf how this is done. A reply that describes the checks is a good sign; a reply that says only that the workers are experienced is not enough.

Hand-stemmed leaf for samples and trials

Because hand-stemmed leaf keeps larger pieces, it also makes a good reference sample: you can see the leaf clearly, judge its colour and texture, and compare it against your own. When you are testing a new grade, a sample of hand strips can show the quality of the leaf at its best, and then you can compare it with the machine-stemmed version of the same grade to decide which you need.

Writing a hand-strips enquiry

Include the grade or range, the strip size band or a reference sample, the limits for stem remnants and fines, the moisture target, the packing, the quantity and the destination. If appearance matters, say how: colour, evenness, and whether you want leaf selected by eye. Ask for photographs of the actual lot before you commit.
